Asili Coffee has become Ghana’s first Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee company, marking an important milestone for the country’s emerging coffee sector and its role in sustainable agricultural development.
The certification demonstrates that, with the right systems and support, Ghanaian coffee can meet global standards for sustainability, traceability, environmental stewardship, and ethical production. This achievement was made possible through support from GIZ under the Alliance for Product Quality in Africa.
It also highlights coffee’s renewed potential as a strategic cash crop capable of supporting rural incomes, strengthening forest conservation efforts, enhancing climate resilience, and contributing to export diversification, particularly in forest edge and underutilised agricultural regions.
Asili’s production and sourcing model brings together:
- Smallholder farmer capacity building, including training, technical support, and farm level data collection
- Data driven compliance and traceability systems aligned with international market and regulatory requirements
- Ethical sourcing and long term market access, enabling farmers to participate in premium global value chains
This certification shows what is possible when public institutions, development partners, and the private sector align around farmer knowledge and market standards. With the right incentives, coffee can play a meaningful role in strengthening rural economies, supporting livelihoods, and advancing Ghana’s environmental and climate commitments.
Commenting on the milestone, Asili Coffee founder John Francois said:
